Book Review: Get Off Your Arse
Written by Brad Burton, founder of the 4N networking events, this one is an amusing romp through his desire to work for himself and the magnetic draw of TV’s Countdown to freelancers everywhere!
I am the world’s worst procrastinator, so this suited me down to the ground. Inevitably it spent three weeks sitting on my bedside table and I guess this is a common problem for the target market of this book…
However, I really enjoyed it once I got into it. More of a personal story than a business guidebook but strongly illustrates why YOU are responsible for your own success and is very funny and enjoyable read.
As you might expect from the founder of a networking organisation, it has some top tips on why networking works for small businesses and how to sell through the room, not to the room. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who is nervous about attending a networking event, or who wants to get more out of their networking time.
If you saw Brad at the National Virtual Assistant Conference in June 2010, you’ll know what we’re talking about when we say Brad is infectious in his enthusiasm!
I endorse your review and would add one thing. There are masses of “inmates” or “corporate employees” being released from the corporate jailhouses around the country (Private and Public Sectors). Having been an inmate in a multinational, I knew how to play my departments and use other skill sets of cleverer employees to do typing, IT, accounts, operations etc. If we didn’t have an expert, we’d outsource the problem to an expert. Self employed and SME’s often do not have such luxuries like departments or treasury chests. So released inmates starting out in civvy street can feel very naked at first. Then get into a self employment spiral and end up with clinical depression. If you don’t have the face to face contact with networking such as 4N, you will soon end up with the shrink. Buy GOYA and READ IT.
Passport breakfast networks enable you to meet, like, know and trust Then you can select the best and cleverest as your personal “versatile departments” or “family” which are needed in every successful business. You can’t do it all yourself which is why you need a Virtual Assistant!
Robert Murray Willis – I protect your valuable – Tadpoles backed by the best insurance. Save money, stress and the cost of the shrink – buy GOYA!
Loved this comment Robert – I always likened being employed as something much ruder than being a prison inmate… But I can see the analogy!
